the word from the venue
The Mavis's return to the The Tote with Special Guests HZED Band & Big League! “The Mavis’s are to Australia what A-ha are to Norway: masters of perfectly crafted pop, renowned for their exuberant live shows and their trademark mix of sparkle, sass, and sequins. Few bands radiate such joy.” — Jane Gazzo, music journalist, presenter, curator and DJ Following recent performances in Melbourne, Hobart and Castlemaine, The Mavis’s are set to return to the stage for more live appearances, with additional dates to be announced later this year. Australian alt-pop icons The Mavis’s returned in 2026 with their brand-new single, “Heaven”, released earlier this year to widespread acclaim. Bursting with the band's trademark melodic flair and emotional punch, Heaven pairs bittersweet lyrics with an irresistibly danceable sound, marking an exciting new creative chapter for one of Australia's most beloved and enduring bands. Formed in 1987 while still teenagers, The Mavis’s began as a four-piece post-punk outfit. Named after a cat spotted during a rehearsal in a friend's basement, the band quickly built a reputation for creativity, heartfelt songwriting and unforgettable live performances. Their first show — performed in a church hall with just four original songs — marked the beginning of a journey that would see them evolve from cult favourites to widely celebrated Australian music treasures. Rising to national prominence in the late 1990s, The Mavis’s earned critical acclaim and multiple ARIA Award nominations, including Single of the Year and Song of the Year for their 1998 hit, “Cry.”
