Max Raz-Liebman presents Wodan’s Oak: a modern jazz work encompassing jazz fusion, prog-rock, medieval and Renaissance music, live electronics, sampling, storytelling, and many other influences. The piece received the 2025 Allan Zavod Award from Melbourne University for its melding of jazz and classical elements. Set across four movements, Wodan’s Oak tells a story of paganism and cosmic forces in the early Middle Ages through a melding of composed and improvised music.

Artist Biography:
Max Raz-Liebman is a bassist performing professionally across Melbourne. His work crosses a wide variety of styles including classical, folk, rock, jazz, and other modern improvised music. Max fuses a passion for world history and ethnomusicology with an extensive technical knowledge to forge a unique musical approach. A fixture of Melbourne’s vibrant music scene, Max’s commitment to expression, groove, and melody has seen him perform and record with a myriad of artists across genre boundaries. His playing can be heard on recordings with Australian jazz legends Andrea Keller and Kristin Berardi, on the ABC Jazz commission The Stzrelecki Suite with the Oscar Bruten Septet, as well as with renowned American trumpet player Ingrid Jensen.
