the word from the venue
THE JAZZLAB is delighted to welcome back Australia’s legendary jazz vocalist – the man with a voice as cool as a long G&T… VINCE JONES! A true icon of Australian jazz, multi-ARIA-award-winning vocalist, trumpeter and songwriter Vince Jones is one of the country’s most acclaimed and recognisable artists. Celebrating 50 years in the business, this maverick musician has left an indelible mark on the Australian music landscape. From creating the highest-selling Australian jazz album of all time, the Come in Spinner soundtrack, to performing at leading festivals across Europe and the US, Jones has long been regarded as a respected ambassador of Australian music, with 25 albums to his name. “A magical performance by Vince Jones, who now has one of the best in a long line of exceptional bands.” — Sydney Morning Herald Vince needs no introduction to any music lover. Renowned for the beauty of his voice and the eloquence of his trumpet playing, an evening with Vince promises musical indulgence, evocative memories and deep emotion. There is simply no one like Vince Jones in concert. His quiet charisma holds audiences spellbound as he performs much-loved original works including Trustworthy Little Sweethearts, Nature of Power, Rainbow Cake and more from hisextensive catalogue. Each melody transports listeners beyond the worries of the world into a space of reflection and pure musicality. His trademark tenor is light, warm and effortless — and with this band, the music swings, soothes and surrounds you. Since emerging from the Melbourne jazz clubs of the late ’70s and early ’80s, Jones has set the benchmark for Australian jazz vocalists. His international career has never hesitated in its evolution, always driven by the moment. A rare, genre-defying artist, he creates music without borders. Relaxed, cool and unhurried, his smooth vocals captivate as he sings with clarity, honesty and love for the material. As a composer and interpreter, he remains prolific and relevant, continually exploring new musical terrain. Confident in his distinctive sound, he sings with nothing to prove — only a deep joy for the craft. A reflective and socially conscious artist, Jones has never shied away from speaking on matters close to his heart — the planet, injustice, nature and the environment. His insights weave through both his songs and his stage presence, offering audiences thoughtful commentary alongside musical mastery. With a career spanning decades, his passion and creativity remain as vibrant as the day he first stepped onstage. His longevity in the ever-changing Australian music industry is celebrated widely, earning him numerous accolades, awards and the admiration of peers and audiencesalike. Jones continues to headline major arts festivals across the country and is frequently invited by conservatoriums to mentor the next generation of musicians. Particular about the company he keeps, Vince continues to perform with some of Australia’s finest musicians. His current ensemble features Matt McMahon (piano), Ben Robertson (double bass), John Mackey (tenor saxophone) and Felix Bloxsom (drums) — a band whose collective respect for the art of jazz shines brightly onstage. Australia’s leading jazz vocalist, Vince Jones is a remarkable interpreter and composer in a contemporary jazz style — a style that resonates equally with listeners and fellow musicians. As a vocalist, he prioritises feel over flash, allowing audiences to truly connect with the music. His trumpet playing has grown into a distinctive voice of its own: reserved, thoughtful and deeply expressive. A single, considered phrase from Vince carries more weight than a hundred hurried notes. Born in Glasgow, Vince moved to Australia with his family at age 11. He grew up in Wollongong, absorbing his father’s horn playing and his mother’s jazz records. The feel and essence of jazz became part of his world from a young age. Beginning as a bebop trumpet player, he had no idea that within a decade his sublime voice would touch listeners across the country and beyond. By 20 he was performing in Melbourne’s club circuit, drawn to the emotional power and improvisational flair of R&B. With creativity in his bones and a naturally golden voice, his unique sound evolved — and the journey of one of Australia’s great vocalists truly began.
