The Colour of Pomegranates: Tarquin Manek and Moopie

A Colourful Storm and Tender present a screening of Sergei Parajanov's classic film, The Colour of Pomegranates, accompanied by a live score by Tarquin Manek and Moopie. The Colour of Pomegranates depicts the story of Armenian bard Sayat-Nova through a uniquely surrealist, kaleidoscopic lens. Its themes of cultural oppression, life and death and sexual repression and discovery, conjured by an unconventional narrative, allusive symbolism and textural vividity, have led to its cult following and critical acclaim as a poetic masterpiece. We will screen the original, unrestored version (78 minutes). Tarquin Manek is the Naarm-based artist responsible for the behind-the-scenes fruition of numerous renowned projects, including work for Carla dal Forno, CS + Kreme, Jonnine (HTRK), Kallista Kult and YL Hooi. An accomplished, if not elusive, solo artist and performer, he brings his signature bass clarinet on stage to form a dramatic hybridised, improvised set with Moopie to reimagine the film's
